Palym thought she and her best friend Xiao were on an adventure. They had left their rural home in search of something greater, but neither could have anticipated the monster's attack their first day in the city. Before she knew it, Palym was swept into a world beyond her wildest imagination, the world of the Sidereal Exalted and Yu-Shan.
Where will the road of this Chosen of Journeys take her? And what will become of Xiao, left behind in Creation?
One thing is certain: Palym must forge her own path going forward, even if that means fighting back against the Celestial Bureaucracy itself!
I wrote this novel for the backers of the Kickstarter for the Exalted RPG. It’s the sequel to the short story “The Circle Will Be Broken,” which appeared in the anthology Exalted: Tales from the Age of Sorrows. It’s the story of a young woman who becomes one of the Sidereal Exalted, servants of the gods of the planets, and her investigation of the incident that killed the person she replaced.
The latest edition of the roleplaying game was being developed as I wrote the book, which made for a bit of a challenge, as things in the setting evolved separately while I was writing. Because of that, one of the developers of the game – James Huggins – offered to come in and make sure that the novel matched up well with what he was helping create for the game. In the end, he contributed so much that I asked the publisher to credit James as my co-author on the book.
